OXFORD!!!!!!

Finally I have arrived with all my stuff in Oxford! The journey was quite an adventure. I had a very, very heavy suitcase, a bike, my laptop, a poster roll and an additional bag, because I did not manage to get all into my suitcase. I had planned enough time to get onto the train so this part was ok. In Oxford I first had to find a place to lock my bike, but the place which is supposed to be used for that was really crowded. I found a place quite in the middle and took a taxi to get to Linacre College. When I arrived at the college, all the doors were locked and Nobody could be seen. After about 10 Minutes some member of the college came out and let me in. "Normally the front door is open, just today it is closed for some reason...."....Somebody could have told me that. I got to the reception and could collect the key, and luckily all my boxes I had posted two days earlier had already arrived, so I could take a big taxi and take all that things with me. And here is where I am living at the moment:

The window in the first floor, right on the edge is my window. The house is ok, just the kitchen is quite small:
The bathroom is ok as well, it is small, but we only have to share it with two people, and the shower is really, really good, much better than in York.
And that is my room, a bit larger than in York. But it is not so nice that my window opens to the street, which is quite busy. It seems I have to get used to it.
Most important: mini socks!!
Und ganz wichtig: die Minisocken!!!

That's the view out of my window:
Und das ist der Blick aus meinem Zimmerfenster: Today I have had my laptop checked by the IT officer which took approximately 3 hours.... now I am finally allowed to connect to the network.... after nearly 3 days deprivation. I have been in the lab as well for some time today. I got my desk, a lot of safety stuff to read and an introductions what I am supposed to do during the next month. They have planned quite a lot of things but it sounds really interesting. Thats it for now, more Oxford impressions later this week.

Packing and Moving part 1 completed!

Finally I have finished packing yesterday. It took me nearly the whole day to pack all my stuff so that I have between 19 and 20 kg in each box. I will never move using parcels again... I have nearly nothing here and it were still 9 boxes. I have no idea where all that stuff came from. Luckily my supervisor helped me to bring all the boxes to the post office by car. But the ladys there were quite surprised. It doesn't seem to be an everydaything to send so many boxes at a time. But finally they are all on their way now and I hope they arrive ok in Oxford. Tomorrow there will be our poster presentation and on satuday morning I will go to Oxford by train with my bike and all the rest of my things which hopefully fit in one suitcase. Thats it for now and hopefully I will be back online with Oxford pictures on monday if my internet is working then.

2 weeks holiday and back in York!

After two weeks holiday I am back in York and starting to prepare my move to Oxford. The holiday at home was really good, Iam well recovered, had a great sailing weekend and my PhD in the Research Center Jülich is also sorted. We had a small sailing regatta in Lippstadt, with changing teams so that as many people as possible had the chance to be a helmsman. We had the greatest sailing weather: lots of sun, up to 30°C and wind... that happens approximately at 3 weekends a year.

Some of the children already opened the swimming season:

5 min..... 4 min.... 1 min.... START!!!Even the youngest had a try:
Auch die Jüngsten konnten es mal versuchen:

The "cleaning lady command" or the "bitch boat" during the concentration phase before the start. Yes, the headscarves are pink... and not only they...

...and during the race...isn't it great?
...und während der Wettfahrt... isses nich schön?Yesterday I came back to york, my plane was on time for the first time, amazing.... Now I have started to prepare packing for Oxford... but this room is tooooooo small. If you put up 2 boxes the room is full... I have no idea how long it takes to get everything into ideally 20kg boxes... that will be great fun... I hate moving....especially with royal mail and rail!

Another visitor.

I know my blog is quite boring at the moment, but I am doing extreme report writing to have some easter holidays, and I am just not in the mood to write any more in the evenings. So, last weekend my little brother visited me. It was quite short, because he could only stay until sunday. He was quite excited because it was his first time in England. On Saturday we went to the city center and he was really shocked when he saw all tis ready to cook vegetables in M&S. I mean its obvious that most of the vitamins are lost in such food...

On Saturday evening the food was much better, thanks to Nala and Penny who cooked chinese for us! Really great, especially the peanuts. Now I understand why the peanuts I bought are unroasted....

To get another impression of York, we went to Toffs afterwards, but it was not really good that day. Sunday was more relaxed. We slept a bit longer, and the made a new atempt to get into Betty's. But it was just impossible, I guess because of mothers day last sunday. So we had again some pizza and noodles and the he hab to leave. And his plane was late again, because Manchester airport was closed due to ice.
I am looking forward to my easter holidays know. I will be two weeks at home, but they will be quite stressful. But it seems I am lucky and I can sail at least one regatta. I really miss that.

Day off in Oxford

Yesterday I have been to Oxford to talk to my supervisor about my external project. It is quite fare away and I spent approximately 7.5 h on the train. But Oxford is really great, especially when the sun is shining, and my project seems to be very good as well. I have a nice supervisor and I am really looking forward to my time in Oxford, because it must be amazing during the summer. The last thing I have to sort out is accomodation, which can become a bit of a challenge. Here are some pictures from Yesterday:

The station: bike friendly, very good, because I decided to take my bike with me in the train.
That looks very similar to Münster....
Oxford has the best bookshop ever: Blackwalls, I have never seen so many books at one place before. and on the picture there is just one floor....

And last but not least: my pets!

Some news...

Last weekend I had some visitors. Iris and Regina from my orchestra came to York for three days. We had a very good time and it was a nice variety for me. We spend most of the time in York City, just looking around in all the nice, little shops.

Some York impressions:
York Impressionen:

York Minster:

Mirror inside the Minster: you can take funny pictures with it. Tip for tourists: If you go to the Minster late like 6pm, you can see most of it for free.

Some more York impressions:

And that is how tea is served in Betty's: you get a pot of tea, a pot of hot water to dilute the tea, milk and two different kinds of lump sugar.

Yes, there are pedestrian lights in England, but very few british people actually use them. But I have to say, if you use them, you are waiting for ages to cross the street...

By the way, my external placement in Oxford is finally confirmed, next Wednesday I am gong to Oxford to find out more details about the project. Now I have to find a preferably cheap way to get all my stuff down there in April. Suggestions welcome!
My internal project is going well, next week one of my crystals is going to France for data collection. If that works fine I have really good results for my report. That's it so far.

That's were I spend my time...

Long break in my blog, but at the moment I am not doing anything exciting except my project. So today there are some pictures from my lab, where I spend most of the day.
That's my work bench, normally I have to share that space with three other people, but they are on holiday this week. But as you can see it is no problem to use all that space alone...

And here are my bacteria growing happily at 37°C. That shaking must be great fun...

This machine is for protein purification. It is a set of pumps and sensors where you can attach different solutions and columns, like the long white one on the right side. That one costs around 1000 pound, so one has to be very careful...
And you get pictures like that. When the blue line goes up, protein is coming (hopefully...)
This is the SDS-gel bench where we separate proteins depending on their size in a kind of wobble pudding between two glas plates.

I got Crystals!!

Yes, I have started my first screens on Tuesday and today I already had some nice Crystals from one protein which you can see on the picture. It is really amazing when you are looking at hundreds of little drops and suddenly there is one which shows such nice , obvious crystals! Aren't they beautiful? You may call me crazy, but that is what I like about my job, you never know what happens, and sometimes things work in the first trial...

It's Blogtime!

Lots of things happened during the last zwei weeks and I will start with the most recent one: FG-FOOD and -BOWLING on thursday. We met quite early in Edge and we had to wait a lot until all guys who wanted to come had arrived. Dominic and Nala decided to use the time to make a little FASHION SHOW:

....right, Nala with Dom's clothes. Nala, I think you need to grow a little bit until you can swop clothes with Dom...

But Nala seems to own the time...
Aber Nala scheint die Zeit zu besitzen...
